How our technology helped

£15,000 average saving on wastage each year

Being able to deal with faulty equipment before it is used has saved the business time and money

85% increase in the number of near misses reported

This more streamlined process also resulted in gathering substantially better quality data

10% saving on Toolbox Talk  administration time

Time saved on paper-based administrative tasks saved the business a further £4,000 a year

The app gives everybody the means to report faulty equipment or near misses, instantly. That data will not only make this a safer place to work but will no doubt save the business money too.

The challenge

The challenge

Design Rationale experienced a near miss in the form of a glass handling equipment failure. No personal injury occurred however, it highlighted a requirement for regular procedural reviews of smaller handling equipment and their suitability for use.

There was a desire to prevent a similar situation occurring in the future which included sharing the learnings from this incident with the whole workforce. With the implementation of the Building Safety Act 2022, this continuous improvement was of paramount importance to demonstrating a safer, more responsible business in line with the ‘Golden Thread’.

The solution

Fit for Work’s near miss reporting feature was configured to enable site and project management teams to report a near miss, wherever it occurred. Automatic alerts were set up to inform key personnel. The app also gave the ability for any team member to report faulty equipment as they check-out of their shift, automatically alerting the Health and Safety Manager that a review is required.

Today, the Fit for Work dashboard gives Design Rationale the ability to upload and share Toolbox Talks with the whole workforce. The ability to check that these Toolbox Talks have been read and understood further improves Design Rationale’s Quality Assurance.

The result

Design Rationale’s QA processes have significantly improved since using the app as a consistent way to capture data and inform the workforce, resulting in an increase in near misses being recorded. This reliable, streamlined process which is accessible to all, provides an affordable solution to communicating critical information resulting in a more informed, safer workforce.

Identifying faulty equipment immediately ensures that smaller equipment that is not normally subject to regular review now gets picked up, saving the business time and money from equipment failure.

COVID-19 held up construction work

COVID-19 held up construction work

Design Rationale- a specialist architectural metalwork and glazing contractor - needed to put additional safety measures in place to protect their staff and to reassure the main contractor that project work was safe to continue.

The company looked for new technologies that could support a safe return to work, including temperature checking devices, thermal imaging cameras and supporting mobile software.
